excert from 'PASCAL' by BEN ROGERS p 26 - 28

In an essay that Pascal wrote towards the end of his life, advising a young nobleman on how to think about his world authority, 3 Discourses on the Condition of the Great ( probably 1660 ) , Pascal opens with an analogy that heatly captures just this confusion. A castaway finds himself thrown up on a distant island whose inhabitants have lost their king. By chance he happens to resemble the lost monarch and, deciding to take advantage of this good fortune, he lets himself be anoited king. Pacal maintains that an analogous fantasy underlies the temporal order, where men assume that some among them, who have NO natural title to nobility, are in fact noble :

Do not imagine that it is any less by chance that you possess the wealth by which you are the master, than that by which that man found himself king. You have no right to it in terms of yourself and your nature, anymore than he did...

You possess, you say, your wealth from your ancestors; but it is not as a result of a thousand accidents that your ancestors acquired it and that they preserved it ?

Indeed on Pascal's account, the only important difference between the situation of the castaway and the real world is that the castaway at least knows he is not a genuine king, while most of the world's rulers are VAIN ENOUGH TO BELIEVE that they possess superior qualities that uniquely qualify them to rule. No wonder that, as Pascal suggests in one fragment, when philosophers like Plato and Aristotle wrote about politics it was as if to lay down rules for a madhouse.

To the philosophers, the people's creduulity was almost incredible. They actually took the ludicrious political order into which they happened to be cast, as an object of profound respect. Yet the philosophers did not stop at drawing ATTENTION to this ILLUSION; there was more fun to be had at the expense of the people than that.

If physicians did not have long gowns and mules, if learned doctors did not wear square caps and robes four times too large, they would never have decieved the world, which finds such an authentic display irrestible.
